Woodharbor Participates in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Project

Woodharbor was excited to team up with successful North Iowa contractor,  Larson Contracting,   to participate in the Extreme Makeover Home Edition project for the DeVries family.   The DeVries home is located near the Southern Minnesota town of Hayward,  just north of Woodharbor’s Northwood door plant.

Taking part in the project was a very eye opening experience.   As most of you know,   hundreds of volunteers demolish the existing home and build a new home in less than a week.   What you may not know is that the organization before the building begins happens almost as quickly.

Larson Contracting contacted Woodharbor just over two weeks before they needed the doors.   The design required flat panel doors in poplar with split finish – stain on one side,  enamel on the other,  which made Woodharbor custom doors ideal for the project.   For a custom door manufacturer the quick turn around isn’t so simple,  but Woodharbor was up to the task and happy to do it.   Using PrairieLake Express doors enabled us to have them built in a week.

As you can imagine,  building a house in a few days requires amazing scheduling.   Woodharbor driver,  Jay Jaspers was glad to make a special Saturday job site delivery,   as the doors needed delivered within a one-hour window.   Later,  the installers had only two hours to install them – in the middle of the night by the way.

Fortunately,  it all went smoothly,  and with the help of volunteers and hard work from Larson Contracting and the Extreme Makeover team the house went up as planned.   Although muddy farm fields and rain made "Move the Bus" day a bit messy,  the very deserving family obviously enjoyed everything about the experience.   Woodharbor is pleased to have been a small part of it.
