She gravitates toward spaces that feel authentic rather than overly polished… balancing timeless design with moments of personality, color, and texture that make a home feel truly individual.

One of her standout WoodHarbor projects, A Ranch to Come Home To, reflects that philosophy beautifully, with custom cabinetry thoughtfully integrated throughout the home to create a cohesive yet highly personalized experience.

We recently spoke with Laura about her design perspective, the materials and finishes she’s currently loving, and the details she believes make cabinetry feel truly elevated.

Can you share a little about yourself, Laura Medicus Interiors and the types of projects you specialize in?
“I specialize primarily in remodeling older and historic homes, which has always been a passion of mine. Along with renovations, I also work on a few new builds and newer homes each year as well.”

What design elements, materials, or finishes are you currently gravitating toward most in kitchens and cabinetry?
“I’m especially drawn to natural wood cabinetry right now — walnut in particular. I love mixing stained wood with painted cabinets to create warmth and contrast. I also love color, and it always makes me happy when clients are open to using a custom cabinet color to create something unique and personal.”

What are you seeing customers ask for most often right now? Any common themes or trends?
“Soft off-white or putty-colored perimeter cabinets paired with darker wood islands are very popular right now. I’m also using a lot of soapstone, and clients still love unlacquered brass plumbing and hardware. To add personality and warmth, we’re layering in details like hand-painted backsplash tile and wallpaper. “

Is there a WoodHarbor project you’re most proud of? Can you describe it? What made it stand out?
“One of my favorite WoodHarbor projects is a home I call “A Ranch to Come Home To.” The entire home features WoodHarbor cabinetry, from the kitchen and bar to the bathrooms, mudroom, and laundry. The kitchen includes large cabinets with retractable doors, even a hidden television behind one set while the bar features glass cabinetry with a walnut interior and retractable doors. We also incorporated beautiful white oak bathroom cabinetry and a fun lilac vanity for the daughter. What made the project stand out was how custom and cohesive every space felt. “

What details do you believe make cabinetry feel truly elevated?
“Any time you can incorporate a thoughtful custom detail, it helps set a kitchen apart. That could be using a custom color, extending cabinetry beyond the standard layout, or adding materials like wood beadboard or wallpaper to the back of a cabinet. It’s often the small touches that add up to something really special.”

What do you value most about working with WoodHarbor?
“I really value WoodHarbor’s willingness to collaborate and try something new.  I know that if I have something different that I’m looking for that isn’t a standard for them or isn’t something I’ve seen them do before, I just have to ask.”  The vast majority of the time the answer is “Sure!  We’ll give that a go for you!”  I love that.
